How to Choose a Countertop Self-Checkout Kiosk

How to Choose a Countertop Self-Checkout Kiosk

A countertop self-checkout kiosk lets customers scan items and pay at an existing counter. It can be a practical option for convenience stores, grab-and-go outlets, and concession stands with limited floor space. Before ordering a sample, check five things: usable counter space, barcode scanning, payment terminal fit, receipt printer access, and compatibility with your checkout software.

An October 2026 report from Kiosk Marketplace covered smaller camera-based checkout units used in sports venues. For buyers considering a barcode-based kiosk, the layout question is just as relevant: can customers complete a transaction comfortably on the counter you already have?

1. Measure the working area, not just the kiosk base

Measure the usable counter width and depth. Allow space for customers to set down their items, use the scanner, reach the payment terminal, and collect their receipt. Check where power and network cables will exit, and leave enough room for the connectors.

Ask for a dimensioned drawing and mark the kiosk footprint on your counter with tape. Place a typical basket of goods beside it and walk through a transaction. This can reveal a layout problem before you order a sample.

2. Test the scanner with your own products

A barcode on a flat carton can be easier to present than one on a curved bottle. Test the proposed scanner with your own products, including small labels, glossy packaging, and any 2D codes your software needs to read.

Check what happens in the application after each scan. Does the correct item appear? Does it appear only once? Can the customer tell whether the scan was accepted? These checks verify the scanner and application together.

3. Confirm the payment terminal model before approving the enclosure

Give your hardware supplier the exact make and model of the payment terminal. Check the mounting points, cable routing, and access for replacement. If the terminal accepts chip cards, leave enough room to insert and remove a card without hitting the counter or enclosure.

The payment provider or system integrator should confirm transaction compatibility. The hardware supplier can then assess mounting and cable access for the specified device.

4. Make sure staff can replace the receipt roll in place

If your workflow requires paper receipts, check where the customer collects the receipt and how staff open the printer compartment. A door that opens freely on a workbench may be blocked by a shelf or nearby equipment after installation.

During the sample test, replace the paper roll with the kiosk in its intended position. Also check how the checkout application handles an out-of-paper event and what staff need to do to resume service.

5. Approve the sample with your actual checkout software

Run a complete transaction on the proposed hardware and operating system: scan products, correct a basket error, pay, and print a receipt if required. Then test a declined payment and a network interruption with your integration team.

Record the approved hardware configuration, operating system version, and peripheral models. This gives the buyer, software team, and manufacturer a shared reference before bulk production.

When is a countertop kiosk a better fit?

A suitable counter is already available. The checkout needs a dedicated location without an existing counter.
Customers have enough room to handle items and reach the controls. The existing counter height or layout makes the controls difficult to reach.
Staff can access the printer and cables with the kiosk in place. The project needs a dedicated enclosure for more peripherals or a different service layout.

Planning a countertop self-checkout project?

SOMANPOS manufactures self-service kiosk hardware for software companies, distributors, and system integrators. See our compact self-service cashier terminal for an example of a countertop configuration.

For a hardware recommendation, share your usable counter dimensions, checkout application and operating system, payment terminal model, and scanner and receipt printer requirements. SOMANPOS can review the hardware configuration for sample testing with your software team.
